Why we need to think zinc?

Zinc is a fundamental mineral, a cellular building block, and an essential cofactor in over 1000 enzymatic reactions in every cell throughout the body.

Vital for the healthy functioning of the immune and reproductive systems, zinc also supports mental processes and gut function and is needed for skin health. It even regulates genetic expression and protein synthesis, is utilised in many of the body’s detoxification processes and is an important antioxidant.

Zinc deficiency is a common occurrence

Unfortunately, this critically important nutrient may be deficient in up to 50% of the world’s population, due to poor dietary intake. As there are no specialised storage systems for zinc, it needs to be taken every day; however, our dietary intake is largely dependent on zinc soil levels, which have been found low in Australia, New Zealand and many parts of the world.

Adding to the rising deficiency problem, zinc is easily lost during food processing; therefore, higher amounts of zinc may be required to cope with our modern, stressful and often toxic environment.

Choose the right form of zinc for optimal health

Many health conditions are associated with zinc deficiency, which makes it a key supplemental mineral for many healthcare practitioners. Choosing a highly bioavailable form is essential for zinc repletion and to maintain optimal levels.

Clinical studies have shown zinc citrate to have a higher absorption rate and zinc content than other forms. It also has the added benefit of being free of the metallic and bitter aftertastes of other forms, such as zinc sulphate and zinc acetate.

While the recommended daily intake (RDI) to prevent zinc deficiency varies from 8-14mg per day in adults, treating a deficiency can require supplemental doses of up to 50mg per day of a bioavailable form. Maintaining optimal zinc levels will depend on individual needs and consideration of the many risk factors for deficiency.
